5 Most Reputable Awards in Football

1 The Ballon d'Or

Since 1956, France Football magazine has been giving out the Ballon d'Or award to the greatest footballer in the world every year.

The oldest and still the most significant award in the game, the Ballon d'Or was merged with the FIFA award for six years till 2009 but has since become an independent award.

First conceived by sports journalist Gabriel Hanot, the award initially only rewarded the best European player in a season. That changed in 1995 when players from any country active in European leagues became eligible.

It then became a global award in 2007. Football journalists were the original voters but in 2007, team captains and coaches were given voting rights.

Lionel Messi has won this award seven times followed by Ronaldo who has won it five times.

FIFA World Player of the Year

The FIFA World Player of the Year was an association football award presented annually by the sport's governing body, FIFA, between 1991 and 2015 at the FIFA Awards. Coaches and captains of international teams and media representatives selected the player they believe to be the best in the previous year.

From 1991 to 2009, FIFA presented the best men's football player in the world with the World Player of the Year award before it merged the award with the Ballon d'Or for six years.

The Golden Ball

The best footballer may not be a part of the winning side and may not even have the best stats in the tournament (goals, saves, assists) but must have left their permanent mark on the quadrennial showpiece with their performances.

The award was introduced in 1982 and it is sponsored by the sports manufacturer Adidas and France Football magazine.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains the most successful player in this category having won the award seven times.

The European Golden Shoe

The European Golden Shoe (sometimes referred to as the European Golden Boot) is an award that is given to the player who finishes the season as the leading league scorer across all of Europe's top divisions.

First introduced for the 1967-68 season by French football magazine L'Equipe - who called the award the Soulier d'Or, which translates to 'Golden Shoe' - it is presented on a yearly basis.
